What an AI app builder actually costs

The number on the pricing page does not tell you what you will pay. Not because anybody is hiding anything, but because the platforms in this category charge in different units, and different units do not compare by division.

This guide explains the four units, shows the cost no page prints, and gives you a comparison method that takes an afternoon and is worth more than any table.

The four units, and what each one measures

Credit. The most common and the most slippery, because it means different things on different platforms. On some it measures the cost of the AI's work and varies with the size of the task: generating a whole app consumes far more than changing a colour. On others it is effectively a message under another name. Two tools advertising "500 credits" can get very different amounts done.

Message. Counts how many times you asked for something, not how much work it was. It is predictable, and it is generous to anyone who asks for big things, because an enormous request costs the same as "make the title bigger".

Seat. Charges per person with access. It makes sense for a team and is the worst model for somebody working alone who just wants an app standing.

Consumed token. Closest to the real cost and hardest to predict, because a large task can cost several times a small one without that being clear before you ask.

Why division does not work

Two platforms at the same monthly price can differ tenfold in what you actually get done, and neither is lying. Three reasons:

What counts as one unit changes. On one platform a small fix costs almost nothing because the unit is cost; on another it costs exactly what a whole feature costs, because the unit is the message.

The second unit exists and nobody compares it. Several platforms count AI credits and integration credits separately. In an app that talks to external services, the second is what runs out first, and almost every comparison looks only at the first.

The quality of the first answer changes the denominator. If tool A gets it right on the first try and tool B on the third, tool B costs three times as much for the same result, on the same pricing table.

The cost no page prints

That is the third item above, and it deserves a section because it is most of the bill for anyone complaining that credits run out.

The retry loop. You ask, the output comes back wrong, you ask again. That second round is AI work and somebody pays for it. On most platforms, that is you.

Add the invisible rework: the app that compiles and breaks on open, the screen that overflowed on a phone, the form that shows "saved successfully" without saving anything. Each of those becomes a new request, and every new request is a new charge.

How that changes the maths. A platform 30% more expensive on the table that gets it right first time comes out cheaper than a cheap platform that needs three rounds. And the difference appears nowhere before you use it.

The method worth more than the table

One afternoon, and it actually answers:

1. Write one request, for the app you actually want. Not the tutorial's example. Say who uses each screen, what each person can see, and what happens when somebody submits the form.

2. Run that same request, word for word, in two or three tools. All of them in the category have a free plan, several with no card.

3. Write down three numbers per tool: how many rounds until it was usable, how much credit or how many messages disappeared along the way, and how much of the result you would have to redo by hand.

4. Multiply by your month. If you plan on ten changes a month, the number of rounds per change is what decides the plan you need, not the table.

That method also answers the question nobody can answer from a pricing page: if the more expensive tool gets it right more often, it is the cheaper one.

Three things about how that is counted:

Free is metered in messages per day, not credits. It is the easiest unit to understand when you are starting, and the plan does not ask for a card.

On the paid plans a credit is a unit of cost. Consumption is normalised against a reference model, so a credit means roughly the same amount of work regardless of which model did it. That is what stops a change of model from silently changing how far your plan goes.

The summary

Compare units, not subscriptions. Add the rework, because it is most of the bill for anyone who gets surprised. And prefer measuring to estimating: an afternoon running the same request in two tools answers better than any comparison, this one included.
